Five Reasons We Love Spring Skiing

by Kirsten Dobroth | April 4, 2018

Here at GetSkiTickets.com we can hardly believe it, but April is already upon us, which means that across the country lift operations will shut down, mountains will close, and the 2017/18 ski season will slowly but surely end. But, until that time, we’re still basking in what little of the season is left, because there’s nothing better than a spring skiing season full of mountain-top barbecues, bluebird days, and slush laps to chase away your post-powder day blues.

Goggle Tans

Sure, a goggle tan typically denotes that someone has been skiing –a lot—throughout the season, but there’s no reason you can’t play catch up these last few weeks! Just remember the sunscreen—you’re going for the natural “because I rip, bro” glow, not raccoon face.

Change it Up

Sunny groomer days might leave you a little less inspired to hit the mountain than deep powder days, which is why it’s the perfect time to bust out that other set of planks you’ve had stashed in your back closet since this time last year. We’re talking snow bikes, ski blades, snow-skates – it’s the perfect time of year to change it up and get your thrills on a different mode of snow sliding.

Barbecues

The best way to get a taste of what spring skiing is all about? Fire up the grill and make a day of mountain fun. Plenty of ski areas have mountain top grills, and if not, invest in a mobile cooking space you can throw in the back of your car with the rest of your gear for a more homemade spin on après-ski. Don’t forget a few local brews to wash it all down (but, of course, drink responsibly if you’ll be hitting the slopes afterwards).

Retro Ski Gear

Just like retiring your go-to powder day gear, spring skiing is the perfect time to give your regular snowpants and jacket a rest (and probably a wash), and dig out the one piece that some older family member–who was probably a liftie in the 70s or 80s—passed down to you. Other favorites for slush laps: onesies, spandex, or—for the bold—jean shorts (also known as “jorts”).

Pond Skimming & Spring Festivals

Our favorite part of spring skiing? The closing day celebrations that come along with it. Pond skimming always draws a crowd to watch the splashes (and crashes) of all who seek glory from shredding across awaiting pools at mountain bases across the country – and spring concerts and closing day festivities that typically follow them.
