Keeping Tabs on The Freshest Tracks

by Kirsten Dobroth | December 24, 2015

Has anyone been keeping up with snow accumulation from resorts across the US?! There is an insane amount of snow falling throughout the American West. Specifically, the 24 hour snowfall totals coming out of California add up to feet of freshies, with even more in the forecast for the next few days. Free refills, anyone? Anybody planning on spending the holiday in the Lake Tahoe area has apparently been very good this year, seeing as up to 13 more inches of snow is expected over Christmas Eve. These Californian resorts rounded out the top 5 in the country for the most snow over 24 hours.

  1. Kirkwood 37 inches in 24 hours.
  2. Heavenly Mountain Resort 36 inches in 24 hours.
  3. Squaw Valley – Alpine Meadows 36 inches in 24 hours.
  4. Northstar 34 inches in 24 hours.
  5. Boreal Mountain Resort 28 inches in 24 hours.

For those not fortunate enough to already be in Northern California enjoying some of the fluffy, white perks of El Niño, both San Francisco International Airport and San Jose International Airport are four hours to the West of Tahoe. As for the rest of us, pretty much the entire Western United States is seeing some high snow totals with more on the way. In particular, Open Snow is calling for feet more of snow in areas of the Pacific Northwest, although most of the Southwest should see a good amount of accumulation over the next few days as well. East coast skiers will be disappointed, but surely not surprised, to hear that continued warm temperatures haven’t been, and will continue not to be, very advantageous to their snow totals. However, if a warm Winter is creating some powder days nostalgia, some resorts in Quebec have steadily been adding to the snow pack, with a few more inches set to stack up throughout the week.
Keep an eye on the snow stake this weekend, as it should be a big one across much of the US, and take advantage of some of those holiday vacation days!

Making the Most of the End of the Year

Saving the best days for last? Well folks, it has been a phenomenal ski year out West (sorry East coast skiers, maybe next year!), and with that comes the most heart-wrenching time of year, when we must say goodbye to our beloved mountains and let the beauty of summer...

Purgatory – The Prettiest Resort in the Southwest?

About 7 hours south of Denver, striated cliff bands welcome you as you make your way up through the town of Durango to Purgatory Mountain Resort. The name of the resort is certainly a misnomer – Purgatory appears to be anything but! Protected by its remote location,...

Staying safe in DEEP pow

Let’s talk about the snowpack. It’s not just your imagination, 2022-23 has been an excellent snow year so far. The West in general is still dry as ever, but it is nice to at least take a moment to enjoy the snow we do have. In California, reeling from a couple years...
