A Little Place Called Aspen

by Kirsten Dobroth | February 4, 2016

Aspen has had a pretty big week. From the annual passing through of the Winter X Games, to some pretty major snow, Aspen’s four resorts have been the place to be as of recently. Check out some of the best that went down, or is still coming down, from the past week.
X Games Prodigies
The buzz around this year’s X Games festivities had to have been the notable presence of, for lack of a better word, kids on the podium. At 15 years old, snowboarding phenom Chloe Kim repeated as the Women’s Superpipe gold medalist, making her the first athlete ever under the age of 16 to win two gold medals at the X Games. Just about as impressive as two gold medals by the age of 15 is one gold medal by the age of 13, which skier Kelly Sildaru so coolly captured during Friday’s Women’s Slopestyle event. Sildaru has been turning heads since she was in her single digits, a mere four years ago, and should be fun to watch as she continues to compete. By the way, have you seen her and her 8 year old brother’s 2015 edit? Ridiculous.
So. Much. Snow.
The past few days in Colorado have been pretty epic in terms of Winter storms. The last three days, in particular, have seen about 3 feet of new precipitation blanketing all of Aspen’s slopes with more on the way throughout the week. CAIC is warning of pretty sketchy avalanche conditions right now, but mid week powder days are pretty nice in bounds as well. While all of Colorado has been getting hit with the latest storm cycle, all of Aspen’s resorts cracked the top 20 as of February 2 for 24 hour snow totals, with Aspen Mountain coming in 6th for 24 hour snow totals. If the next day on the hill can’t come before the weekend, skiers and snowboarders lucky enough to make it to any of Aspen’s resorts should find some soft, fresh powder and sunny skies.

Making the Most of the End of the Year

Saving the best days for last? Well folks, it has been a phenomenal ski year out West (sorry East coast skiers, maybe next year!), and with that comes the most heart-wrenching time of year, when we must say goodbye to our beloved mountains and let the beauty of summer...

Purgatory – The Prettiest Resort in the Southwest?

About 7 hours south of Denver, striated cliff bands welcome you as you make your way up through the town of Durango to Purgatory Mountain Resort. The name of the resort is certainly a misnomer – Purgatory appears to be anything but! Protected by its remote location,...

Staying safe in DEEP pow

Let’s talk about the snowpack. It’s not just your imagination, 2022-23 has been an excellent snow year so far. The West in general is still dry as ever, but it is nice to at least take a moment to enjoy the snow we do have. In California, reeling from a couple years...
