Top Five Snowpacks in the Country

Haven’t you heard? California has the deepest snowpack this winter, as evidenced by the Golden State claiming the top five spots for resorts with the most snow thus far in the season throughout the United States. California’s snowy season isn’t without some major complications from all the rain and snowfall, however; major flooding and rainstorms have been wreaking havoc throughout the state, and while the precipitation has led to a winter that’s unrecognizable from years past — and has relieved drought conditions — with mountain communities having a hard time keeping up with the falling flakes. While we hope the best for the communities affected by widespread flooding and devastation from recent weather-related events, the resulting accumulation has left some serious snow totals in its wake that can’t be ignored.
Mammoth Mountain
Mammoth’s base area currently boasts a 200 inch depth for the season, and a summit depth of 350 inches throughout the winter thus far, and with storms dropping feet of new snow each week, it’s not very surprising. Mammoth’s claims over 500 inches have fallen at its base this year … holy cow, that’s a lot of snow. And if that’s not enough, more snow is on the way through the weekend, adding to those figures, too.
Boreal Mountain Resort
Boreal’s snowpack depth currently sits at 260 inches, with 588 inches falling on the resorts so far this season. While a powder day is sure to be waist-deep and perhaps even life changing, spring skiing will most definitely have enough leftovers to go around and still make for some great conditions on the slopes (who knows, maybe it will still be dumping well into spring!).
Squaw Valley – Alpine Meadows
The only thing more storied than skiing at Squaw Valley might be this season, where over 500 inches have graced the terrain and created a snowpack depth of 243 inches. Those totals are sure to go up, too —  Squaw is expecting more snow through the week and into the weekend.
Sugar Bowl Resort
The term “insane” is really the only fitting descriptor for the amount of snow Sugar Bowl has gotten this season — 627 inches with more coming down throughout the week. The ski area’s base depth sits at 145 inches, with a summit depth of 237 inches.
Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe
Rounding out the top five snowpacks in the country is Mt. Rose ski area that is seeing massive snow totals from each storm cycle this winter. The resort’s snow depth is 216 inches, which isn’t quite as mind boggling as the 639 inches that have been dumped on its slopes so far this winter. Happy shredding!
