Skiing in Spain

Most people equate Spain with sun and sand, Pamplona and paella, Museo del Prado and Madrid. But take note skiers and snowboarders: Spain has the highest average elevation than any other European nation outside Switzerland. So it’s not too surprising that Spain has a wealth of ski resorts spread across the Iberian Peninsula. The Pyrenees host the bulk of them with Baqueira-Beret, the nation’s largest, and La Molina/Masella (a.k.a Alp2500), a short jaunt from Barcelona, topping the list. Overlooking the Mediterranean and with views of North Africa is the Sierra Nevada resort, which has the country’s biggest vertical drop (3,500 feet). And within an hour’s drive of Madrid, you can find the Sierra de Guadarrama range and two smallish ski hills, Navacerrada and Valdesqui. Another thing visiting snow sports enthusiasts might want to consider: The average Spaniard considers it somewhat déclassé to arrive at the lifts before 10 a.m., so you’ve got at least an hour of uncrowded slopes in front of you.
