Skiing in Finland

In the land of reindeer and saunas, lakes and forests, it’s easy for a visiting skier or snowboarder to find a whole lot of solitude: Finland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe with an average 41 residents per square mile. But what Finland lacks in people it makes up in snow. Being the most northerly country in Europe save Norway and Russia, Finland’s ski season generally starts in late October and finally peters out well into May. Although cross-country skiing is the most popular form of winter snow play, there are more than 75 lift-serviced resorts, mostly small hills next to cities and towns, to cater to the downhill set. However, there are four good-sized resorts in the northern region of Lapland that are considered Finland’s best and brightest: Pyha, which has the country’s steepest slope; Levi, the site of an annual World Cup tour event in November; Ruka, the country’s most popular ski and snowboard destination, and Yllas, the resort with the most runs (63) and vertical (2,355 feet).
