In a country more noted for its Nordic skiing and ski-jumping prowess, Poland has a surprisingly robust Alpine skiing and snowboarding scene, with more than 250 resorts providing lift-served terrain mostly in the southern mountains along its borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Szczyrk Mountain Resort, which lies in the Beskid Slaski range, is Poland’s largest Alpine resort, with 13 lifts servicing 23 miles of trails and 2,400 feet of vertical. Zakopane, the so-called Winter Capital of Poland, lies at the foot of the High Tatras mountains and is the jumping point for two local resorts, Kasprowy Wierch, which has four lifts and 3,200 feet of vertical, and Gubalowka, with its four lifts and 1,000 feet of vertical. The resort with the highest elevation — thus, theoretically, the best and most consistent snow — is Kasprowy Wierch, which tops out at 6,519 feet in elevation.
